Forty five minutes later, a familiar face appeared, pushing open the doors to the post-op ward. She’d cut her hair since I’d last seen her, that dirty blonde mane she’d grown when she left the Territorials cut back to just above her shoulders. It let me notice she was missing part of her ear. How the fuck did that happen?

She split into a grin when her eyes landed on me.

Behind her were two other people, following in her wake. Emile I knew, but there was also an athletic woman, tanned skin, with very dark brunette hair, almost black. She walked the same way Emile did, straight back and confident strides. I filed her immediately under “cop” and thought I recognised her from somewhere.

Laurel and I met halfway down the corridor, and in that hug I gave as good as I got, the tightest squeeze, like a drowning man offered a life ring. I had my best friend back, my sister. But it was time to find out what I’d lost.
